Feast of Mary, Mother of God

Happy New Year!

With the end of the old year and the beginning of the new, I must take time to give a big "Thank You" to everyone who
made this past Christmas celebration a wonderful time for so many: the people who decorated the church, the musicians
and choirs, the many volunteers who helped out with the Children's Mass on Christmas Eve, to  Randy Hohn who put together
the Nativity scene outside, the Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers, and Deacon Andrew Young who gave such a great
homily.  Someone told me that a friend of theirs from out of town gave the ultimate compliment: "It was like I was at the
Vatican for Christmas!"  Yes, everything comes together.  This year we had a new sound system put in the basement,
and the results were wonderful.          I know Christmas takes a lot of work, but as one mother told me years ago:
"Boredom happens. Joy takes work." And yet, Christmas tells us that salvation is God's free gift.  Jesus is not our idea, but
God's.  At the center of Christmas is a Child we did not plan, prepare, or instigate.  He is the Gift who gives meaning to every
good gift.  If we give, it is because deep in our hearts the Gift has been born in us.  Our giving is a pale shadow of that gift
that is the Child.  "Today a child has been born for you, Christ the Lord."  Thank you for your many gifts this Christmas, which
comes from the Child born in your hearts today.    --Fr. Larry
